What happens

Installers quote a timeline against an empty building and discover the actual constraints — no containment, no spare circuit, walls that will not carry a mount — once the holiday has already started.

What a campus engagement usually looks like

A representative project for a mid-sized college begins six to eight weeks before a term break. We survey each room for viewing distance, wall construction, network drop availability and spare circuit capacity, then produce a schedule that groups rooms into phases matching the length of the break. Lab machines are imaged and asset-tagged at our bench during the weeks before, so the on-site window is spent installing rather than configuring. Training is scheduled for the first staff day back, when teachers are present but classes have not resumed.

Survey before the funding request, not after

The most common way a KPK school or college project stalls is that funding is approved against a panel or lab cost, and the survey afterwards reveals that half the rooms need a network drop, a protected circuit or wall reinforcement before anything can be mounted. Those costs then have to be found from a budget that has already been fixed. Can you complete a computer lab installation within a term break?

Usually yes, provided the survey happens well before the break rather than during it. The work that actually consumes time on site is rarely the machines — it is cabling, power provision and mounting, and those are exactly the things a remote estimate gets wrong. We survey the rooms several weeks ahead, pre-image every machine at our bench, and arrive with a phased schedule and the electrical work already scoped. Where the honest answer is that a break is too short for the scope, we will tell you that at survey stage and propose splitting it across two breaks rather than starting something we cannot finish.

How do we specify equipment for a lab that students will treat roughly?

Prioritise serviceability and durability over headline specification. Practically, that means business-class chassis rather than consumer models, wired peripherals that can be replaced individually for a few hundred rupees, cable management that puts nothing within casual reach, and a configuration you can re-image quickly when a machine is inevitably left in an unusable state. It is also worth holding a small buffer of spare units and peripherals on site — a lab of forty machines with two spares stays fully usable through most failures, whereas a lab of forty-two with none does not.

What network capacity does a campus actually need for online examinations?

Concurrent device density is the number that matters, and it is the one most campus networks are not built for. A hall running two hundred students on an online assessment simultaneously places a completely different demand on wireless than the same floor area during ordinary teaching, and access point counts derived from coverage models will be badly short. For examination spaces we plan on substantially higher access point density, put those APs on their own controller configuration, and — where the assessment genuinely cannot be allowed to fail — recommend wired provision for at least a proportion of seats as a fallback.

How should a school budget for power backup alongside classroom technology?

Treat it as part of the same line rather than a separate project, because the technology is unusable without it. The practical approach is to identify which rooms genuinely cannot tolerate an interruption — computer labs mid-assessment, any room with an interactive panel, the server or MDF room — and protect those circuits first, rather than attempting whole-building backup on a school budget. Where a school already has solar or an inverter, we check whether classroom equipment survives the switchover cleanly, because repeated unclean shutdowns will eventually damage panels and lab machines.
