Smart Boards for Pakistani Schools: A Buying Guide That Starts With the Back Row

Most panels that fail in Pakistani schools fail for two reasons: they were sized wrong, and nobody trained the teachers.

Pakistani schools have bought interactive panels in real volume. Nationally, procurement has reached the scale of a PKR 1.4 billion agreement covering more than ten thousand classrooms in Sindh alone, structured on instalment terms that put the technology within reach of schools that could never have funded it as a capital purchase.

A meaningful proportion of those panels end up used as expensive projectors, or not used at all. The reasons are consistent and avoidable.

Rule one: size from the back row

This is the mistake that cannot be fixed after installation.

Screen diagonal should be driven by the furthest viewing distance in the room, not by the budget line. A practical rule:

Diagonal in inches ≈ distance in feet from the back row × 4 to 6

The multiplier depends on how much fine detail the teaching involves — small text, numerals, diagrams push you toward the higher end.

For a typical Pakistani classroom with the back row eighteen to twenty feet from the front, that puts you at 75 inches or larger for comfortable readability. A 65-inch panel is genuinely adequate in smaller rooms and seminar spaces. It is frequently specified in larger ones on cost grounds, and the rear third of the class cannot read it.

Measure every room. Rooms that look identical on a floor plan routinely are not.

Rule two: check the wall before you quote the mount

An interactive panel of 75 inches or more is a substantial weight, and it will be touched, pressed and leaned on daily by children.

Before specifying a fixed mount, establish what each wall is actually built from. Many Pakistani classroom walls are solid masonry and will carry it easily. Others — particularly partition walls in newer buildings or converted spaces — will not, and a heavy panel on an inadequate fixing is a safety problem, not a technical one.

Where the wall will not take it, the answer is a floor-standing frame or a mobile trolley. That is a real cost and it belongs in the quotation, not in a variation order halfway through the rollout.

Rule three: budget for training, and protect it

This is the variable that determines whether the investment produces anything.

A panel installed without hands-on staff time reliably becomes a display surface. Teachers project to it and carry on as before — not through reluctance, but because learning new classroom technology during a working term is a genuine ask on top of a full teaching load.

What works:

  • Short practical sessions with the teachers who will actually use it
  • Using their own teaching material, not a vendor demonstration
  • Scheduled when staff are present but classes are not — the first day back after a break is ideal
  • A follow-up session several weeks later, when they have hit real problems rather than hypothetical ones

Training is the first line deleted when a budget tightens. It should be the last.

Rule four: plan power and network per room

Two constraints that surveys catch and remote quotations miss:

Network. Casting, content and any cloud-based teaching software need connectivity in the classroom. Many classrooms have none. Adding a network drop per room is a real cost and it is frequently absent from panel budgets entirely. See our network equipment page for how this is scoped.

Power. A panel losing power mid-lesson is disruptive; repeated unclean shutdowns will eventually cause faults. In load-shedding areas you need either a UPS sized for the panel and its computing module, or the classroom circuit brought onto existing inverter or solar backup.

Where a school already has solar, verify that panels survive the grid-to-inverter transfer cleanly. Many do not, and the resulting reboots are usually blamed on the panel rather than on the transfer. Our power and solar page covers that check.

Rule five: glare will make a badly placed panel unusable

Ambient light is the underrated variable. A panel positioned opposite a large window can be genuinely unreadable during certain hours of the day, regardless of its brightness specification.

Assess window position and light direction per room, specify brightness accordingly, and adjust mounting position where the geometry allows. In rooms where it does not, budget for blinds — considerably cheaper than replacing a panel.

For public-sector buyers: the specification problem

Education tenders in Pakistan frequently specify panels by a model number that has already been superseded by the time the tender is evaluated. Literal compliance becomes impossible for every bidder.

The way through is documentation: quote line by line against the BOQ, mark each item compliant or equivalent, and attach manufacturer specification sheets demonstrating the proposed panel meets or exceeds the stated resolution, touch points, brightness and warranty term. That pack is what a procurement committee needs on file to accept a substitution defensibly.

The practical constraint in the province is rarely enthusiasm. It is infrastructure: many classrooms lack a network drop, a spare protected circuit, or a wall built to carry a sixty-kilogram panel.
